Hidden House: Blending Nature and Architecture

A Unique Northern Residential Design by Jian Zhang

Admiring nature, learning from nature, the designer has combined nature, building, and human residence into one, utilizing natural criteria within the limited spatial range to unify natural beauty with artificial beauty, thereby creating a spatial environment that exists harmoniously with the natural environment.

Built by the mountains and secluded within the natural landscape, Hidden House is a remarkable residential project that blends regional style with modern techniques. Designed by the talented Jian Zhang, this unique dwelling showcases the designer's deep appreciation for the connection between space and nature, preserving the tradition of constructing buildings with local Taishan Stone to create a hidden gem with a distinctive Northern temperament.

The design of Hidden House is a testament to the seamless integration of natural and artificial elements. The space is carefully planned to ensure that the natural sceneries blend harmoniously with the artificial landscapes. Two platforms and corresponding buildings were designed for the yard, taking into account the height difference. The higher platform showcases the regional uniqueness through local constructional approaches and plastering characteristics. On the other hand, the lower platform is paved with sand and stones, creating a circular path that surrounds the landscapes and offers a well-proportioned appearance to the entire space.

One of the notable features of Hidden House is the use of ancient stone walls, which serve as representative architectural structures. These walls are thick, providing insulation that keeps the interior warm in winter and cool in summer. The limited sunlight that enters through the windows creates a darker ambiance, which is complemented by the wooden ring beams that support the weight of the ceiling. This distribution of weight ensures that the stone walls bear less pressure, maintaining their structural integrity.

Hidden House spans an impressive 450 square meters, offering ample space for comfortable living. The design prioritizes an environment that connects with nature, with large French windows allowing natural sceneries to enter the living spaces. The incorporation of natural elements filled with vitality enhances the overall ambiance and brings a sense of tranquility to the residents.

Completed in 2019 in Taishan, China, Hidden House is a testament to the designer's meticulous research and attention to detail. The project successfully blends traditional regional style with modern techniques, resulting in a residence that not only provides a comfortable living space but also showcases the beauty of the surrounding natural environment.

Hidden House has received well-deserved recognition for its outstanding design. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life. Hidden House stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and architecture, making it a truly remarkable residential design.
